Winter Resources Edit.
Below are a selection of my favorite podcast episodes, articles, and books from the last few months — I hope they fuel your inspiration so you can kick of 2024 ready to take on whatever it brings!
Podcast Episodes
The Uncharted Veterinary Podcast, Episode 238: How Do We Speak Their Language - The Next Generation of Pet Owners
Masters of Scale, Episode 29: When to Ignore Conventional Wisdom with Danny Meyers
Women at Work: Communicating Effectively When You’re Running on Empty
Central Line: The AAHA Podcast, Episode 74: Words Are Hard: What to Say When That Conversation Comes Up (Again)
*Shameless plug! This last episode is one with me as the guest, chatting with Dr. Katie Berlin about those difficult moments we all face with clients. I think it’s a pretty great episode… but you’ll have the be the judge! ;-)
Articles
I love a good breakdown of market trends (I mean, that’s what I do, right?!), and these two pieces are a nice, short summary for our industry.
2023 AAHA Technician Utilization Guidelines
OK, hear me out — our technicians are magical unicorns and we know there is more they can do. Take a look at how you can be doing more with the team you already have… and how you can help them be more satisfied in their work, too.
“These 5 Trends Will Shape How Consumers Spend Their Money in 2024, According to the Maker of Guinness and Smirnoff” by Grace Dean, Business Insider.
An excellent piece to get your head buzzing with what folks want to do with their cash in the future. As the slow season hits, take some time to mull over how your practice will be part of the future economy.
Books
Never Lose a Customer Again, by Joey Coleman.
An excellent run through of customer psychology with plenty of inspiration to help take your front of house up a notch.
When Your Pet Dies: A Guide to Mourning, Remembering, and Healing, by Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt.
A book written for pet owners in the midst of their grief, but it is packed full information I wish I’d learned in vet school. Reading it has helped me support clients through the euthanasia process much more effectively.
Thanks for the Feedback, by Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen.
One of my top five book recommendations! It will change your perspective on giving (and receiving) feedback. This book gave me the push I needed to get better at giving feedback to team members!
Unreasonable Hospitality, by Will Guidara.
A wonderful exploration of hospitality. I’d recommend it as a way to kickstart getting creative in your own hospital.
